The “It’s a Zoo !” Theater Competition annually invites all elementary students from throughout Central New York to stage their own productions based on children’s literary classics which incorporate original or adapted works of literature with themes of nature, animals or ecology. Participating in this process allows teachers and students alike to use their talents and challenges them into integrating the performing arts into a hands on approach to reading and studying that stimulates imagination and motivation of a child. These live renditions of books on stage present plays that are as elaborate as any professional production and help turn students into a dynamic, engaged and motivated learners.

“What happens tomorrow depends on what you do today”- author Lynn Cherry writes in “The Great Kapok Tree” (1990) - a popular book choice staged often by students. The author’s quote illustrates not only the interdependence of man and nature but also points out the value of a community partnership with schools that this well-defined program provides.
Each year a panel of Community Judges visits schools at their semifinal performances. The assessment becomes a school-wide celebration of their magnificent work and all students receive a very special trophy-hardcover book of literary classics. Each school is also presented with an Animal Adoption Program from local zoos to highlight their ecological mission.
The grand finale of “It’s a Zoo!” is an annual public presentation of finalist plays within a Family Festival whose proceeds are dedicated to benefit an institution supporting children’s causes (2009 TBA). Past receipients include The Utica Zoo, Stanley Theatre Renovation Fund, and the Mid York Library System.
At "It's a Zoo!" Theater Competition every performance is memorable, every student is a star and every team is a winner!
